Piscataway, N.J. – Drexel field hockey fought back from a 2-0 deficit to Rutgers late in regulation to tie the game with less than one minute remaining, but the Scarlet Knights scored in overtime to secure a 3-2 win. The game was the first of the season for both teams. Rutgers' Amy Lewis, who notched 21 goals in 2006, accounted for all three of the host's goals.
Lewis scored twice in the opening eight minutes to give Rutgers a quick 2-0 lead. She notched the game's first goal on a penalty corner at 4:44. It would be the Scarlet Knights' only penalty corner of the half as Drexel took six corners in the first half and were unable to score on any. The Drexel offense had a tough time solving goalie Rosalyn Wentko who stopped all five of Drexel's 10 shots that were on goal in the first half. Despite Drexel's 10-4 lead in shots after the first half, Rutgers held a 2-0 advantage going into intermission.
The Dragons finally got on the board as Carolina Gibernau (Montevideo, Uruguay/Universidad de la Republica) converted a penalty stroke to cut the Rutgers' lead to a single goal with less than seven minutes remaining in the game. The Dragons were awarded the penalty stroke after Amanda Kicera (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) was fouled on a breakaway attempt. With time winding down, the Drexel offense looked for an equalizer when they were awarded a penalty corner. Sarah Gostomski (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) received a ball after a stick-stop and sent a pass to classmate Casey Mouser (Havertown, Pa./Haverford). Mouser sent the ball back to Gostomski who lifted a shot past Wentko to tie the game with 42 seconds remaining.
In overtime, Lewis regained her offensive touch as she took a Corinne Bach pass and scored 6:13 into overtime. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made four saves on the day when Wentko registered seven. Drexel outshot Rutgers, 15-12, for the game and held a 7-3 advantage on penalty corners.
Drexel returns to action on Wednesday, Aug. 29 when the Dragons will travel to La Salle for a non-conference game at 4:00 p.m.
